I've had a colorful past.

I follow these same steps.

01

Find the Why

This is the North Star.  As with any goal, it helps if it's S.M.A.R.T. — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. "Make it pretty" is not specific enough.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  That goal doesn't even fly when I'm my own client.

When the project gets off-track, the Why — a concrete and well-defined goal — will save us every time.  Without a specific purpose, be prepared for potentially costly random meandering.

02

Understand the Who

  • Who are the people using whatever you're creating? What do we need to do so that we can see them as real people?

  • What do they need? What do they care about?

  • Where, when, and how will they be using your creation?

  • How will we know our solutions are solving the right problems?

03

Be Curious

Each project is a new learning opportunity.  Immerse yourself.  Don't assume that this is "just like that other project" even if the client says so.  Even if you were the one who created "that other project."  There will be something new in Step 01 or Step 02 that could result in the difference between ok and revolutionary.

Beyond your target audience, listen actively to your stakeholders and to your team.  It's impossible to please everyone, but having empathy for other people's concerns and respect for their ideas, lives, and backgrounds will enable smoother collaboration.

My colorful present...
